Many of us are used to seeing the yellow banding on a buff-tailed bumblebee moving between flowers, or the bold markings of a ladybird warning predators to keep away.
But often we only get a fleeting glimpse as an insect buzzes past us or scuttles through the undergrowth, and miss the amazing shapes and features of so many of our insects.
Capturing the details
That’s where the Sensibee comes in. Images produced from our remote sensing devices help capture these details, allowing us to see features that may otherwise be missed.
Recently one of our Sensibees captured a Batman hoverfly (Myathropa florea), a species that gets its common name from the marking on its thorax, just behind the head, that bears a striking resemblance to the Batman logo.

These are the moments that remind us why biodiversity monitoring matters — not just for the data, but for the wonder of discovering what’s been there all along, waiting to be noticed.
Best wishes,
The Sensibee team 🐝
